The transmitter with my OWL+USB does not look like the unit in the instructions?

Picture26

A new style Transmitter has been introduced to the OWL+USB.

This is a change only to the appearance of the plastic enclosure, to rationalise the design with other new OWL products.

There is no change to the electronic operation of the Transmitter.

There is no change to the user set up and use of the product.

The CHECK button is now located in the battery compartment at the rear of the Transmitter, alongside the RESET button and CHANNEL switch. The operating sequence is identical to the old model.

A wall hanging slot is provided on the rear of the enclosure.

How do I set up a single tariff in my OWL +USB Electricity Monitor?

Please note:- The OWL Monitor does not have block tariff functionality input/operation where the first number of kWh are at one value and everything else used is another. For a block tariff we recommend that you enter an average tariff value in Tariff 1, calculated from your typical billed kWh usage (monthly/quarterly) and assuming the following example then Total cost of kWh would be 210kWh @ 20.90p & 690kWh at 10.00p equalling £125.43. The average tariff value would be £125.43 divided by 900kWh giving 13.94p.

The Tariff Alarm enables the user to set a cost value that if exceeded when a multitude of appliances (ie Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Tumble Dryer, Cooker, Electric Shower)are all in use and warns the user that their current usage is high. This is more beneficial to those people on Peak/Off-Peak Tariffs so that they minimise spend during peak tariffs.

How do I set up a block tariff in my OWL +USB?

Tariff types change regularly, and the OWL CM160 cannot directly accommodate a block or standing charge tariff. Utility companies cannot directly tell you which units you will use will be charged at the particular tariff. When a tariff is set for say the first 100 units at a higher price, generally they simply charge you for 100 units from your bill for the month and the rest is charged at the alternate price. If a tariff is set so that you pay so an additional standing fee every day, or every month, then that standing fee is simply added to the cost over each day or the month.

To gain a better understanding of what your electricity is costing you at any given time, it is better to spread those standing charges out across all the usage so you can see what your appliances are costing including the block or standing charges.

To do this you need to understand what the total cost is per unit. This is best done from a previous bill, or even better over several bills.

Find the total you have been charged by your Utility company for a given period

Find out how many units you have used in that period

Calculate your tariff by dividing the total cost by the number of units.

This will give you a single tariff figure somewhat higher than the lower tariff figure stated by the Utility company, and between the two figures in the case of a block tariff.

Enter this as a single tariff by following the instructions for a single tariff setting on the CM160.

How do I change the batteries in my OWL +USB?

Battery compartments are in the rear of both the Monitor and the Sender.

4 screws need to be removed to access the transmitter Battery compartment, a small crosshead screwdriver is ideal for this.

Please ensure that batteries are fitted in the correct polarity, as failure to do so will mean the unit will not work and may cause internal damage to the circuitry.

THE OWL CM160 monitor can be connected to the PC when it needs new batteries. This will keep it powered up to ensure no data loss occurs, doing this will maintain the Device ID and continuity of data in the software.

The Transmitter batteries should be changed by removing the four screws if required.

If this is achieved, pressing the CHECK button on the Transmitter, and the SEARCH button on the monitor should be enough to reconnect the two components.

If a restart is required, or the units have been out of pairing for some time due to battery loss, then the following full reset instructions are preferred.

Full RESET PAIRING.

1. Please remove the Batteries from both units Monitor and Sender

2. Insert the batteries into the Sender, replace the battery cover and press the RESET button on the back of unit.

3. Note:-A small flat/crosshead screwdriver is required for the screws that secure the battery cover and a small implement such as the end of a paper clip is required to press the RESET button.

4. Insert the batteries into the Monitor. A tone should be heard and all the segments should appear on the screen, followed by “----“ which should flash showing that the Monitor is searching for the Sender.

5. Press and hold the green CHECK button on the front of the Sender until the red light starts to flash

6. Press and hold the SET & RESET buttons of the Monitor simultaneously (this can be quite tricky), release the RESET button and a tone should be heard. This should be followed by a second tone at which point the SET button can be released. The Monitor will show “----“ again for no more than about 20 seconds and should then show “0” when the Sender has been found and pairing is complete.

Can the OWL +USB Electricity Monitor be used for 3 phase?

The transmitter can accept up to 3 different current sensing clamps.

The signals from those current sensors will be added together inside the transmitter and the monitor will reflect the total sensed usage.

To monitor All 3 Phases separately will require 3 Separate units.

The Voltage setting required for the CM160 when being used with 3 Phases will depend on the installation being monitored.

If the Power is being used L-N as 3 Separate Power supplies then each will be 230V

If the Power is being used in Delta format connection 3 Phase then set to 230V

If the Power is being used in Star Formation 3 Phases then the Voltage needs to be 400V

For further information please go to our Solar PV guide...

My OWL +USB does not connect to the monitor?

New software –fe02.00.11 and beyond will improve connectivity to your monitor through the USB for the software connection.

Please visit our web site shop for the free update software if your version number is lower.

To install new software, please remove any old software first, using the uninstall program provided in START>ALL PROGRAMS>THE OWL>Uninstall. This will ensure any old drivers are also removed and offer a chance to save any old data.

Unzip the downloaded files into a new folder for use. Install new software using the msi file provided in the download.

Once the software has been installed and before you start the program for the first time, put your saved be.db file into the PROGRAM DATA>2SE folder and name it be.db (delete any old files with that name) then connect your OWL + USB monitor to the PC.

You should see the drivers initialising, and finally receive the message that your drivers have been successfully installed. Once the drivers are installed, start the software using START>ALL PROGRAMS>THE OWL>THE OWL

You will be asked to register your software.

Click the Settings button top right of the software screen.

Select the Connected To Tab in the new window.

Find your device in the left hand side window, click on it and drag to the left hand side window under name.

Rename your device, using no punctuation marks of windows reserved file name symbols for the name. Click Save and select Save your changes.

If your device has stored data this should now be downloaded into the database and the historic bar graph for years should be on the screen.

Double click into the green block to see months, double click again to see days, etc.

Your software is now up and running.

My OWL software graph only shows a green block?

The OWL + USB software displays bar charts of data as a default.

The Initial screen will show the blocks of data covering the years over which data has been stored.

If you double click into a green block you will see the data for the months of that year for which data has been stored

If you double click into one of the months you will see the days

Double clicking into the days will show you the hours

Double clicking into the hours will show you the minutes.

To back out of the fine detail charts select the period you want to back out to in the data period list on the top right of the chart.

My OWL software graphs have missing data?

When the OWL + USB monitor is connected to the PC the background service will start to download the data from it into the database file.

This can take a short while to start, as the monitor will wait for the next new data to be received before commencing the upload. For a full 30 days of information you can also expect something around 5Mb of data to be uploaded, this can take up to 5 minutes depending on activity levels.

When The OWL Software is started it will attempt to make graphs from the data in the data base. If the upload is incomplete then the graphs will be similarly incomplete.

Please wait a few more minutes, then Close the graph using the graph window X button.

Initiate new graphs using the new Chart button top right of the software.

If the data upload is complete then the graphs will be completed.

Two other issues have in the past resulted in data loss.

The first was associated with older drivers for the software, which have been replaced, please ensure your software version is fe-02-00-11 at a minimum.

If the OWL monitor loses pairing with its transmitter, then there will obviously be lost data during that down time. This data will be unrecoverable.

How do I export CSV files from my OWL +USB software?

From the Options MENU

SELECT Print/Export

SELECT EXPORT SPECIFIED DATE RANGE

IN the From box, enter the date for which you want to start downloading data in the form DD/MM/YY, or select a date from the drop down calendar.

When the data has been exported this will minimise the software window.

CLICK START>ALL PROGRAMS>THE OWL>OPEN DATA FOLDER

Your new CSV file will now be in the list of files in the windows explorer view for the data folder.

This can be renamed and moved as desired.

How do I read the CSV file from an OWL +USB?

Further information is available in the software user guide attached to the downloaded software or on the CD which accompanied your OWL + USB.

A CSV file is a comma-separated values file, where the data is stored as numbers and text in plain form with no formatting characters to be interpreted. A comma-separated values (CSV) file stores tabular data (numbers and text) in plain-text form. This kind of file being plain text can be read using most text editors, such as NOTEPAD, however the data will be difficult to read and interpret.

You can import into a spreadsheet program which has a csv import facility Microsoft EXCEL will do this. Exported data has the following columns:

Sensor

Sensor identification associated with exported data.

Time

Timestamp of when data was recorded.

GHG Factor

GHG Factor applied to recorded data

Tariff Cost

Tariff Rate applied to recorded data.

Amps_Raw_Data

Raw data value relating to Amps measured by the sensor during that time period. (Mul

Amps_Raw_Data_Min

Minimum raw data value relating to Amps measured by the sensor during that time period

(ie Minimum value during that Day, Hour, Minute)

Amps_Raw_Data_Max

Maximum raw data value of Amps measured by the sensor during that time base

(ie Minimum value during that Day, Hour, Minute)

kW_Raw_Data

Raw data value of kW calculated using Amps_Raw_Data and the voltage applied in the settings window when data was recorded.

kW_Raw_Data_Min

Minimum raw data value of kW calculated using Amps_Raw_Data_Min and the voltage applied in the settings window when data was recorded.

kW_Raw_Data_Max

Maximum raw data value of kW calculated using Amps_Raw_Data_Max and the voltage applied in the settings window when data was recorded.

Cost_Raw_Data

Raw data value of cost of electricity using applied tariff during the period between this and previous time stamp.

Cost _Raw_Data_Min

Minimum raw data value of cost of electricity using applied tariff during the period between this and previous time stamp.

Cost_Raw_Data_Max

Maximum raw data value of cost of electricity using applied tariff during the period between this and previous time stamp.

GHG_Raw_Data

Raw data value of calculated weight of Carbon Dioxide emissions using applied conversion factor during the period between this and previous time stamp.

GHG_Raw_Data_Min

Raw data value of calculated weight of Carbon Dioxide emissions using applied conversion factor during the period between this and previous time stamp.

GHG_Raw_Data_Max

Raw data value of calculated weight of Carbon Dioxide emissions using applied conversion factor during the period between this and previous time stamp.

This data is compiled from the Data required by the monitor to display its own readings and the figures in the columns will need to be converted into real world data to make sense. Conversion factors apply to the data to do this.

Take the raw data and using the calculations below, convert the Current, Energy, Cost & GHG data columns.

  • Current (Amps) è Amps Value x 60
    • ie: 0.05 x 60 = 3 Amps
  • Energy (kW) è kW value ÷ 1,000
    • ie: 4.4 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0044kW (or 4.4W)
  • Cost (pence or cents) è Cost value ÷ 100,000
    • ie: 520000 ÷ 100,000, = 5.2pence
  • GHG (kg) è GHG value ÷ 100,000
    • 7100 ÷ 100,000 = 0.071kg (or 71g)

How do I compare tariffs in the OWL +USB software?

The OWL software can be used to compare the costs of different tariffs given your electricity usage history.

If you generate the daily graph for a month in the software it will look something like this:

image00123

By Choosing Settings – Tariffs – Add, you can add in an additional tariff.

This can have up to 6 separate start times, identical to your Monitor, and these will then allow you to see the differences in cost for using the tariffs side by side.

image0023

Placing your mouse pointer over the new black bars will indicate the cost you would have been charged for that day’s electricity using the new tariff. You can then easily compare in different charts annual cost savings, monthly expenditure, daily costs.
